Music and Me

Hey guys! I'm Alli Lawson currently enrolled here at Converse, a freshman pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. I am from Mount Pleasant, S.C and if you're like "idk where the heck that is" an easier way of locating it is basically Charleston. I started playing violin in the 5th grade and immediately fell in love with it. I never really became serious about performing until freshman year of high school. Then I fell into the realm of marching band and band thus learning the clarinet and bass clarinet (bass clarinet is my preference by far). Even though I have not always been so serious about performing music, I have been a music lover for as long as I can remember. I grew up with my grandparents for a good chunk of my life so I have gotten a taste of a lot of different types of music. Aside from music I LOVE to travel and over the summer I went out of the country for the first time and went to my dream place, England! So here is a picture of me totally excited about the London Bridge.

Currently I have been listening to a lot of Cody Fry
Cody Fry was introduced to me a couple of years ago and the first song I ever heard of his is called 'I Hear A Symphony'. He is big on using full orchestras in his music and I think that's why I love his music so much. He uses a lot of big movie soundtrack feeling and full orchestra sounding pieces in the background of his music and adds amazing lyrics on top. My favorite song of his is called 'Photograph' and it uses a piano as the main background melody and as the song progresses so does the instrumentation. The link I am adding actually has an epilogue of the song featuring the entire orchestra, that Cody Fry wrote.

Another artist I love a lot is Louis Tomlinson, who I get to see in July!
Yes, he is the guy from One Direction and I have no shame about it. I really like his music and he just has a very unique sound that just really resonates with me and is nothing like the rest of my music taste which might be why I love him so much. Currently I have been really loving his new song 'Palaces' it's not my all time favorite of his but it's been pumping me up and getting me movin and groovin so I thought I'd share! It also makes me want to learn the drums real bad. If you do watch this video, there is a small flash warning.

Fun Fact: I used to play softball, so the walkup song has been something I actually have used before! I love baseball and softball and I got that from my mom. It is one of our big ways to bond and we watch The Sandlot together a lot. In that movie I heard a real funky jazz tune called Green Onions at the ripe age of 11 and I knew from that moment that 1. I really love jazz music and 2. This song will definitely be my walk up song for softball. So here it is!

Okay so for something I personally do not enjoy listening to is...honestly...I don't know. I really appreciate any type of music. I guess if I had to choose a genre (can not think of any direct songs) it would be like hard rock metal stuff. But even that is loose because I have gone to a rock concert before and I didn't hate it, one of the groups actually had a violinist and it was really cool. But the rock music that just has intense screaming, I am sorry and I am not trying to offend anyone's taste, but I don't understand what they say and can't find a way to enjoy it.

Bonus Round!! I had to share my absolute favorite orchestra piece because it's a masterpiece and I have been so lucky to play it so why not share it with the class! The masterpiece I am referring to is Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony, specifically the 1st and 4th movements.

If you got this far and chose to listen to any of my songs, I hope you enjoyed at least one and can expand your playlist!

  2. Hi Alli! I am liking reading posts and see how people's taste is every time more fascinating, in your case you move from classical orchestra to pop aand jazz, that's awesome! I liked how your grandparents helped you to shape your music taste, the family have a very important role on every life. Your walk-up song is a very good choice, I like how it connects to softball and family memories.

  4. What's up Alli?! You know, to be a musician and an athlete at the same time is fascinating! Just like me! Just like you, I have a desire to travel around the world and learn new things about different and diverse cultures. As I've only been to the Bahamas, I hope like you, I can travel to other countries one day.

  7. I have heard Green Onion before and thanks to you, I finally know the name. The Sandlot mention took me back; I used to love that movie. I also listen to Cody Fry and coincidentally I Hear a Symphony was the first song I heard from him as well. Also, you are crazy for double-majoring in music and biochemistry! I could never.
